1. What are hanging boxes?

Hanging boxes (folding boxes with integrated Euro hang tags or slots) can be hung on shelf hooks to promote sales or allow for self-service. It is impossible to imagine a modern presentation of goods in a shop, DIY store, or supermarket without them. They promote the sales of smaller items, saving space by not taking up precious shelf space. Hanging boxes are often found near cash registers in shops. They are therefore ideal for temporary sales promotions.

Hanging boxes are among the most frequently used packaging materials for food, small electronic articles, pharmacy articles, and other merchandise.

2. The construction of hanging boxes

Hanging boxes are available in several versions, but they all have more or less the same basic construction except for a few details. They always consist of a lid with a punched out slot for hanging, a base, and four walls.

The box body is punched out of a single sheet of carton, folded and then glued along a lateral or a longitudinal seam. After assembly, a cuboid container made of sturdy chromo, natural, or recycled carton is created that can be closed on all six sides. Dust flaps keep dirt out and ensure that the lid does not open on its own.

The individual types of hanging boxes can be distinguished by the design of the lid and the bottom. How these parts are constructed depends on how they will be hung, the weight of the packed box, and the protection required to keep the contents from slipping out. The heavier the product, the more tightly the base must be sealed and the more robust the hang tag must be.

The most common are hanging boxes with Euro slot hangers. These are standardised so that they can be slid onto standard shelf hooks in use throughout Europe. But the hang tag can also have a circle, handle, or hook shape, too. Which type of hang tag is preferred by the customer for the packaging depends on the design, intended look, and purpose of the hanging boxes. Large openings for hanging can also be used as handles, for examples.
